As a vegan in 2010, and after reading the comprehensive history of vegetarianism in America, the moral dilemmas, the environmental impact, and the economic shift that would occur, i feel that an animal free diet and ideology is and will continue to be an innovation in society. If America reduced their meat intake by 10%, 100 million more people could be fed. The primary cause of the greenhouse effect is caused by carbon-dioxide emission in fossil fuels, and it takes three times more fossil fuels to produce an omnivore’s diet. We lost and will continue to lose 85% of our topsoil, 260 million acres of land, and half of all our water in producing livestock. 660,000 animals are killed for meat per hour in the US. Women are three times as likely to get breast cancer if they eat meat daily. The average US male’s risk of heart attack is 50% and that number is decreased to 4% if they were to become vegan. These are only a few of the facts involved with having America continue to eat meat. The history of vegetarianism is long and as time passes, more and more research is being uncovered in favor of it. There is simply no need to eat meat and it would help not only the animals, but the human race to become vegetarian.
